Skowhegan downtown to get new green space

SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A three-story building many consider to be an eyesore in Skowhegan is going to be gone before the snow flies.

The demolition of the old Wallace Radio Shop and two other buildings that wrap around it at the corner of Madison Avenue and Commercial Street is expected to start Oct. 22.

Plans for the location call for green space with park benches and a pedestrian zone.

Skowhegan Savings Bank President John Witherspoon, who helped finance the purchase of the property, says the spot was an embarrassment and it gave a false impression of the community.

The Morning Sentinel reported that Somerset Economic Development Corp. closed the deal on the properties at the end of September.
