PORTLAND, Maine — Community and business leaders are throwing their support behind a casino proposed for Maine’s second-largest city.

Lewiston Mayor Larry Gilbert and other representatives from Lewiston and the neighboring city of Auburn say a casino in downtown Lewiston will generate short- and long-term jobs, generate revenues and stimulate the economy.

Gilbert says he doesn’t know of any local organized opposition to the statewide Nov. 8 referendum asking voters if they want to allow a casino in Lewiston.

A group of Lewiston-area political and business leaders will hold news conference on Tuesday to express their support.

A separate statewide ballot question will be asking voters if they want to allow racinos in southern and eastern Maine.
