ROCKLAND — Penobscot School will be dedicated to helping travelers with Italian language skills and the logistics of getting around in Italy in two courses 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 and 29, at the school, 28 Gay St.

Italian for Travelers will be led by exchange teacher Alessandra Baldetti, who is from Isola d’Elba and Siena, Italy. Baldetti has been teaching four levels of Italian classes for adults and teens, and hosting the Italian tables and potluck dinners at the Rockland-based language school since September 2010. She finishes her training at the school in December.

The course is designed for beginner levels, and will provide speaking practice for introducing oneself, asking directions, situations at the hotel, cafe and boutique. Participants are invited to help prepare — and eat — an authentic Italian lunch. Instruction will be mostly through demonstration and small-group role-playing. The course will be taught, as much as is practical, in Italian, but no previous experience is necessary. Tuition is $80 for the two sessions, and includes two lunches and a practice booklet.

Baldetti’s lifelong interest has been the art and architecture of her region and she will include a virtual tour of the medieval towns and countryside of Tuscany and hints on how to see the local art and festivals.

In September, Baldetti completed a master’s degree, summa cum laude, in teaching Italian as a foreign language at the University for Foreigners of Siena, where she received a bachelor’s degree in 2008. Her thesis, “Overtaking cultural gaps and logistics difficulties while teaching Italian in Kerala (India),” will be published in the journal: DIADORI P., La Ditals risponde 8, sez. Osservatorio, Guerra, Perugia.

Alessandra speaks Spanish in addition to Italian and English. In 2010 she spent six months in the south of India, teaching Italian to young professionals heading for work abroad. She loves to travel and to teach.

Preregistration is required for the class at http://www.penobscot.us. For more information, call 594-1084.
