ROCKPORT — Members from the Rockland Women’s Golf Association worked with Pen Bay Healthcare to put together the first Midcoast Breast Cancer Classic, a golf tournament that was held Aug. 18 at the Rockland Golf Club. More than 100 players participated.

Through the generosity of local business, individual sponsors and participants during the tournament, more than $10,000 was raised to support breast cancer care and support at Pen Bay Medical Center. The funds will go toward educational books for those diagnosed with breast cancer, post-surgery garments such as camisoles to address patient needs immediately after surgery, offsetting the cost of mammograms for young women who do not have health insurance, and meeting the health and living needs of women with cancer whose income and insurance are inadequate.

During the sold-out tournament, players in female, male and mixed foursomes competed for best flight, closest to the pin and longest drive. Under a tent by the 10th tee, local massage therapists offered donation-only chair massages. Also, many local businesses donated gift packages offered in a raffle to contestants.

Raffle and competition winners were announced during lunch. Ladies’ Flight winners were Denise Hennessey, Jean Cassidy, Doris Borkstrom and Darlene Sobeleski with a score of 69. Men’s Flight winners were Mark Hall, Kent Clark, Dale Tozier Jr. and Brian Hurd with a score of 57. Mixed Flight winners were Mike Marriner, Sheila Marriner, TomTolliver and Scott Haynes with a score of 63. Closest to the pin on hole 5 were Shirley Kile at 12 feet, 5 inches and Andrew Macaffrey at 12 feet, 4 inches. Closest to the pin on hole 10 were Jeanne Fifield at 7 feet, 3 inches and Vic Goldsmith at 8 feet, 7 inches. Closest to the pin on hole 18 were Jane Monhart at 7 feet, 10 inches and Roy Bennett at 9 feet, 7 inches. Longest drive for women was Jean Cassidy and longest drive for men was Mitch Perry.

The tournament committee is planning for next year’s tournament to take place Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at the Rockland Golf Club.
