SAD 46 gives up wage increases in light of poor local economy

DEXTER, Maine — In recognition of the poor economy, all four of SAD 46’s bargaining units have agreed to no wage increases for the 2011-2012 year.

SAD 46 directors have ratified new contracts with the district’s bus drivers, custodians, the SAD 46 Education Association and the SAD 46 Education Association Support Staff.

“Each of the bargaining units were very good to negotiate with,” SAD 46 Superintendent Kevin Jordan said Friday. “The difficulty is the economy, the decreasing funding that education is facing.” The employees are aware of the hardships many families face and the lack of funding for education and wanted to do their part to help, he explained.

The support staff’s contract is for the 2011-2012 year. Those members will receive no wage increase and their step increases were frozen at the 2011-2012 level, Jordan said.

The contracts signed by the bus drivers and custodians are for two years and members of both units agreed to no increases during that time. Their step increases also were frozen.

Jordan said the contract with teachers also is for two years. The teachers agreed to no increase for the 2011-2012 year and to a 1 percent increase in the 2012-2013 year. In both years, their step increases also will be frozen.

Administrators have no bargaining unit, but they all agreed to no wage increase in 2011-2012 for the second consecutive year, according to Jordan.

“These are tough times and I’m very happy all of the units really stepped up to the plate and tried to help us in this situation as much as they could,” Jordan noted.
