Maine Apple Day planned in Unity

UNITY — The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will hold 2011 Great Maine Apple Day rain or shine noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at Common Ground Education Center, 294 Crosby Brook Road off Route 220.

The annual event celebrates the history, flavor and tradition of Maine apples. There will be educational workshops on apple art, cooking with old-time apple recipes, Maine’s apple history, wine and cider making and organic apple tree care.

Visitors will have an opportunity to see and taste rare and heirloom apple varieties. Apple experts will help identify mystery varieties. Visitors are encouraged to bring apples that they have grown or discovered.

An apple pie contest with tasting will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Vendors will sell local and organic apples and apple products to take home as well as baked goods, gourmet chocolates, wine and cheese.

Admission is $4, $2 for member of MOFGA or the Maine Pomological Society.

The Great Maine Apple Day is sponsored by MOFGA, Fedco and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
