Milo raises funds for recreation department improvements

MILO, Maine — The Milo Recreation Department was active over the summer months improving its athletic complex with the support of a $40,000 gift from the Harold Alfond Foundation.

Under a $71,000 capital improvement project, the soccer, baseball and softball playing grounds at Harris Field were upgraded, and the tennis courts were repaired, recoated and repainted, according to resident Paul Bradeen, who spearheaded the fundraising for the project.

Construction is under way on a new multipurpose building with a concession stand, handicapped-accessible restrooms, and equipment storage. The new facility is expected to be completed later this month. Future plans include the construction of two new dugouts, Bradeen said recently.

Bradeen said the foundation funds, along with many other generous donations from local merchants, including $15,000 from the former Milo Farmers Union Corp., have made it possible to do the work without a burden on taxpayers.

“There’s an end to what they can give,” Bradeen said of taxpayers.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the project, which benefits nine area communities, can make donations to the Milo Recreation Department.
