BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 2-year-old child spent Wednesday night at Parkview Adventist Medical Center after police say he was found drinking beer Wednesday afternoon in his father’s room at the Tedford Housing family shelter on Federal Street.

The father, 35-year-old Shane Sawler, who lists the shelter as his address, was summoned Thursday morning for endangering the welfare of a child, Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said.

Police visited the shelter at 4:08 p.m. after receiving a report that someone witnessed the boy drinking beer, Hagan said.

Sawler reportedly was intoxicated, yelled at police and “was belligerent.” Hagan said officers used physical force to restrain him and place him in handcuffs, then took him to Mid Coast Hospital, where he spent the night for observation.

The child was taken to Parkview on Wednesday afternoon for observation. Police contacted the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, and the boy’s mother was with the child at the hospital, Hagan said.
