BELFAST, Maine — Belfast Co-housing and Ecovillage has won the People’s Choice Award from the Natural Resources Council of Maine because of its members’ work to establish a model co-housing community.
The group of families and individuals has been working since 2007 to create a residential, ecologically sustainable community on Edgecomb Road.
“Such a community requires diligence and perseverance,” Lisa Pohlmann, executive director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine, said in a press release. “Maine citizens recognize and value such a vision.”
The award was presented at the council’s annual meeting held Friday, Sept. 23.
When the community is built, its houses will require 90 percent less heat than standard new construction thanks to an innovative passive solar design.
The Natural Resources Council of Maine is a nonprofit organization that works for clean air, clean water, protected forests and clean, renewable energy solutions across Maine.
