Senior Appreciation Public Safety Day worth the trip

By Carol Higgins Taylor, Eastern Area Agency on Aging

I can always find a good reason to head to the Bangor Mall. But all sales aside, the best reason to venture to the shopping center is for the Senior Appreciation Public Safety Day celebration. It’s all about seniors 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14.

The event is sponsored by the Penobscot County Triad, an organization comprising seniors citizens, law enforcement and social service agencies, all with a mission of fighting crime, abuse and fraud perpetrated against the elderly. Inside the mall at Macy’s court, tables will be staffed by senior-focused programs.

Of course Eastern Area Agency on Aging will be on hand to answer your questions or to discuss all things senior-related. EAAA also will distribute information about services for seniors, people with disabilities and caregivers.

Other agencies scheduled to attend include Rosscare, AARP, Winterberry Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care Community, Sunbury Village, Westgate Manor, Gentiva Home Health Care, Rosscare with Sylvia Ross Home information, PenobscotCounty Triad, MAS Home Care of Maine and Loving Touch In-Home Care. There will be door prizes from vendors.

Now this is not your typical expo. When you venture outside after visiting the above exhibitors, you’ll see public safety officials gathered in Macy’s parking lot. There will be various types of emergency equipment for you explore.

Get up close and personal with the sheriff’s mobile crime lab, the state police command vehicle, Bangor Fire Command Vehicle fire apparatus and cruisers and Veazie Police Mobile Computers. There will be K9 units in attendance also, for all you dog lovers.

Just like on TV, the Bangor police robot and bomb vehicle, Brewer police hovercraft and Old Town Orono Fire Haz-Mat Truck will be available for you to investigate. As if that were not enough, you’ll also see the Maine State Police and the Sheriff Inmate Work Trailer.

Now before you come to the Public Safety Senior Appreciation Day, sort through all your medications. Bag up any that have expired or that you no longer use and bring them with you, because Triad is holding a Drug Drop-Off station so all old medication can be collected and disposed of properly. It is critical to get old drugs out of your home so there is no chance of them being accidentally taken, by you or a visiting grandchild. And it is just as important to the environment that these medications be destroyed in a safe way so that they do not enter the water supply.

This event is designed to provide seniors and others with the necessary information to help them stay safe. It is fun, free and not to be missed. Just think, when will you get another chance to see all these vehicles in one place?

And you never know what great deal you’ll find at the Bangor Mall. There is something for everyone.
