RICHMOND, Maine — Fire officials say a 9-year-old Richmond boy was burned in a fire at his home that began when the boy was playing with a lighter.
Officials did not release the name of the boy, who was taken to Central Maine Medical Center after the fire. He was later flown to a Boston hospital.
Officials say the boy suffered burns over 60 percent of his body, but they did not provide his condition.
Richmond Fire Chief Andrew Pierce tells the Kennebec Journal the boy was outside when firefighters arrived around 10:40 a.m. Sunday.
Pierce says much of the fire damage was confined to the second story, but water used to extinguish the fire damaged the first floor.
