Time changed for UMaine women’s basketball practice, fan event

The University of Maine has changed the time for Sunday’s first women’s basketball practice and the meet the team event planned with it.

The event is now scheduled for 6 p.m. in Memorial Gym.

Fans are encouraged to stop by “The Pit” to meet head coach Richard Barron, his staff and the Black Bear players prior to their first official team practice of the 2011-12 season.

The informal gathering will give people the chance to meet and greet the Bears as they embark on a new era of UMaine basketball.

“I think it’s a great way for people to get an appreciation for what we’re trying to do and that the best fans are educated fans,” Barron said. “I don’t mean our fans need to be educated on basketball, but it’s fun for them to know what’s going into our strategies and our game plans.”

Youngsters who wish to be considered for the chance to be the Black Bears’ “Ball Kid” at games this season may sign up at the event. Fans also can find out about the Friends of Maine Women’s Basketball booster group.

For more information, contact Tracy Guerrette, UMaine’s director of basketball operations, either via email at or by phone at 207-581-1075.
