DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Jim Ellis of Dover-Foxcroft said he has no greater pleasure than seeing youngsters enjoy fishing and hunting, so it was no surprise he was assisting at the Hooked on Fishing event in Dover-Foxcroft on Saturday morning.

Several children gathered around the small pond were casting line after line into the water hoping to catch a trout during the event, sponsored by the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club.

This is what it’s all about, Ellis said Saturday, “getting the youngsters to enjoy the Maine outdoors without drugs and alcohol.”

The parents and children who attended enjoyed free hot dogs, hot chocolate and coffee thanks to Kiwanis members, several of whom assisted at the event.

Ellis said that while some children kept the fish they caught, he was amazed that others released theirs back into the pond for the benefit of others. All in all, he said, those who participate are typically “hooked” on the recreational sport.
