BANGOR and SARASOTA, Fla. – Margaret Annette Houlihan, 95, died Sept. 29, 2011, at her home in Bangor. She was born Jan. 20, 1916, in Brewer, the daughter of Robert and Margaret (Hartery) Reid.
Peggy Reid was a top student and captain of the girls’ basketball team at Brewer High School. She graduated in June 1933. She then attended Brunswick Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1937. She later worked in Bar Harbor and at Eastern Maine General Hospital, now Eastern Maine Medical Center. It was there that she met a young doctor, John S. Houlihan, M.D. They were married May 18, 1943. Peg Houlihan was an active volunteer in Bangor for many years to St. John’s School PTA, St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, Eastern Maine General Hospital Auxiliary and Current Events Club. She was also a board member of St. Michael’s Orphanage. Peg’s real focus, however, was her family. Instead of nursing a hospital ward, she nurtured a growing family, John, Margaret, Betty, Claire and Eileen. And she was happiest when she had a house full of family and friends at her home on Howard Street. Summers always included several weeks at Wells Beach. After John and Peg bought a home at the beach, Brigadoon, it became a Houlihan gathering spot. Again, Peg loved it most when it was packed with children and grandchildren.
Peg was predeceased by her husband, John, in August 2008. She is survived by her five children, John S. Houlihan Jr. and his wife, Linda, Margaret C. Houlihan Dougherty and her husband, John, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Houlihan, Claire Houlihan Baker and Eileen Houlihan Garvey and her husband, Steve; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A private funeral service will be held at Brookings-Smith, Bangor, with an interment afterward at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery. Those wishing to remember Peg in a special way may contribute in her memory to St. Joseph Healthcare, P.O. Box 1638, Bangor, ME 04402-1638. Condolences to the family may be expressed at
