KENNEBUNK, Maine — Pedestrians and bicycle riders can now cross the Maine Turnpike in Kennebunk on a new bridge, enabling them to walk or ride the 6.2 miles between Kennebunk and Biddeford.

The official opening of the Eastern Trail Bridge was held Wednesday.

The $1.3 million bridge, funded by the Maine Turnpike Authority, is a key element in the mission of the Eastern Trail Alliance to complete a 65-mile stretch of off-road trail from Kittery to Casco Bay.

A bridge over U.S. Route 1 in Saco is expected to be finished by Nov. 1. It will help link nearly 21 miles of trail.

The Alliance’s John Andrews told the Portland Press Herald the bridge was the biggest challenge in completing the trail between Kennebunk and Biddeford.
