OLD TOWN, Maine — Police got two calls Tuesday evening to the same Pembroke Road address — one about child abuse and the other a family fight — and called officers in neighboring Orono for backup.

According to police, the child abuse report turned out to be a neighbor witnessing a man — described as a big Marine — pulling a much smaller man away from an argument he was having with his estranged girlfriend.

The Marine, who was not identified, grabbed Jason Dennis, 25, at around 6:40 p.m. and dragged him across the yard, sat him down and then told him to sit still until police arrived, Old Town police Sgt. Travis Roy said Wednesday.

“He, of course, took off running,” the sergeant said of Dennis.

The investigation determined that Dennis and the mother of his 1-year-old child were having dinner when a verbal, then physical, fight broke out, Old Town police Detective Thomas Adams said. The child was not in the residence.

When police arrived, the 33-year-old female victim was shaking, clearly visibly upset. She had an abrasion on her chest allegedly caused by Dennis kicking her after knocking her to the ground, the detective said.

A witness told police that during the argument, the woman told Dennis that she didn’t want to be abused anymore, Adams said.

Orono and Old Town police searched the area for Dennis. At 7:45 p.m. a manager at the nearby Hannaford supermarket called police to report that a man, later identified as Dennis, “appeared to be on something” and was bothering customers, Adams said.

Dennis took off as police arrived, running across the street, but was quickly caught by Old Town police Officer Brent Fournier, the detective said. Roy assisted.

Dennis was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault and refusing to submit to arrest. He was taken to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.

“He was placed under observation at the jail [because] he was either angry or on something,” Adams said.

Dennis remained in jail on Thursday morning, a jail official said.
