Condition of woman impaled in July in Sangerville upgraded

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The condition of one of two Piscataquis County residents who were impaled in separate accidents in July and September has been ungraded at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Rory Schmand, 47, who was impaled by a tree limb that fell on her vehicle during a thunderstorm on July 6, has been upgraded from critical to fair, an EMMC spokesman said Thursday. Schmand was alone on the Douty HIll Road in July when the limb broke through the window in her vehicle and impaled her in the head.

Josh Parker, 27, of Guilford, who was impaled through the chest by a rafter Sept. 2, remains in critical condition at EMMC.

Parker lost control of his pickup truck and the vehicle smashed through a garage on Route 150. Police believe Parker had fallen asleep at the wheel just prior to the accident.
