Stress reduction class at Pen Bay

Mindfulness: Choosing to be in the present moment without judgment or evaluation.

An eight-week program, “Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction,” will be starting at the Picker Family Resource Center beginning Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. There will be an all-day silent retreat on the Saturday between the sixth and seventh session.

Judith Simpson, M.P.A., will lead the program. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is a practice which is complementary to that of regular healthcare providers. It is based upon the 30-year-old program developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, which has resulted in hundreds of positive scientific research studies.

Participants will learn to use mindfulness meditation, gentle stretching, sensory awareness and body scanning as they examine, with complete acceptance, how they are living presently. They will also practice making choices and decisions that enhance their own health and well-being as they continue through the eight weeks.

Judith Simpson, M.P.A. has completed a long career in adult learning and management for organizations in business, health care and education, which she has enhanced with studies in sensory awareness, yoga, meditation and psychotherapy. She now lives in Belfast, and has led workshops in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for four years. She has completed studies and practicum in teaching this course.
