Posted Sept. 27, 2011, at 8:52 p.m.

The Belfast Co-op will host a trip to visit Maine-ly Apples, a family-owned orchard and retail farm stand in Dixmont. Transportation, provided by Waldo CAP, will depart from the co-op at 12:30 p.m. and return by 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. Preregistration is required. The trip includes a guided tour of the orchard and cider facility given by John and Elaine Olsen, owners of Maine-ly Apples, free samples, and opportunities to pick your own apples and purchase cider and other products. There will be opportunities to ask questions about pruning and tree maintenance, and there is a mile-long nature trail through their woods for hiking.

Maine-ly Apples began in 1983 when owners planted 500 trees. The orchard now has more than 1,650 trees and more than 40 different varieties.

Dixmont Mountain Cider Co. began in 2000 when owners built a cider building and installed an apple brusher-washer and a new stainless steel press.

Preregister at the Belfast Co-op for the trip. The cost is $8 adults, $4 children 12 and under, which covers the cost of transportation. Or preregister by phone using a debit or credit card. For more information, email Kate Harris at kate@belfast.coop or call the co-op at 338-2532.
