Bay Chamber Concerts announces 2011-2012 schedule

ROCKPORT, Maine — Bay Chamber Concerts’ Performing Arts Series, now in its 26th year, will offer a variety of musical genres including rock, classical, Irish, Broadway hits and more.

The season begins at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Rockport Opera House with Bay Chamber’s annual Chamber Music All Stars concert. This audience favorite brings members of the Muir String Quartet and other notable musicians from the chamber music world for a performance.

Bay Chamber Concerts will co-present internationally acclaimed pianist Michael Brown at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Rockport Opera House.

Celebrate the holidays with Bay Chamber Community Music School’s free Holiday Concert featuring all four Odeon Ensembles with guest artist and cellist Marc Johnson at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Rockport Opera House.

New York will come to the Camden Opera House with “100 Years of Broadway,” featuring five Broadway stars performing 50 of the greatest musical characters songs at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10.

Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music 2012 Curtis on Tour concert will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Rockport Opera House. The concert will feature Curtis director and violist Roberto Diaz, Curtis faculty member and guitarist Jason Vieaux, and two institute string players performing works by Paganini and Piazzolla.

Get in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit with Irish ensemble Danu at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at the Camden Opera House.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13, Down East Singers, with noted soloists countertenor John McVeigh and MPBN’s Suzanne Nance, and instrumentalists, including flutist and Bay Chamber Artistic Director Thomas Wolf, will join forces to perform Carl Orff’s masterpiece “Carmina Burana” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April, 13, at Strom Auditorium.

The Performing Arts Series will conclude at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Rockport Opera House with the Turtle Island Quartet, who will perform their one-of-a-kind salute to the great Jimi Hendrix.

Bay Chamber Concerts will present a special concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Rockport Opera House, which will mark Wolf’s retirement after a half-century as artistic director. The program, “Music Among Friends,” will feature Wolf and world-class chamber artists including Curtis Institute of Music Director Roberto Diaz, former Boston Symphony concertmaster Joseph Silverstein, Muir Quartet cellist Michael Reynolds, Vermeer Quartet members Shmuel Ashkenasi and Marc Johnson, and pianist Gloria Chien. The concert will be followed by a champagne farewell reception.
