By Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN Staff

ORONO, Maine — University of Maine police on foot patrol late Sunday smelled what they believed to be burning marijuana as they neared the ornamental garden on campus, and when they investigated found two students smoking pot, Joe Carr, university spokesman, said on Monday.

Zachary Dyson, 19, and Zachary Sargent, 18, were caught around 11:25 a.m. near where the Lyle E. Littlefield Ornamentals Trial Garden and the bike path meet, Carr said.

When the students were searched, police found a baggie of marijuana and a lighter, he said.

Both Dyson and Sargent were charged with possession of a usable amount of marijuana.
