Disney Institute to share business development tactics at Bangor seminar

BANGOR, Maine — Mickey and Minnie Mouse likely won’t be making an appearance, but for the first time ever, Disney is coming to Bangor.

Eastern Maine Development Corp. is bringing representatives of the Disney Institute to Bangor for a day-long professional development seminar Tuesday, Sept. 27. The seminar, “Disney’s Approach to Business Excellence,” will explore topics such as inspiring creativity, leadership excellence, people management, brand loyalty and quality service.

“EMDC is committed to supporting and strengthening businesses in our region. Sometimes that involves bringing businesses in with an outside perspective,” said Jen Brooks, EMDC’s director of business development. “Bringing Disney and its proven business practices to this region is one way we’re working to help local organizations grow and prosper.”

Brooks, who takes her family to Disney World each year, spotted a Disney Institute flier while on vacation, read it, brought it back, and proposed bringing it to Bangor.

Essentially, the seminar helps professionals find ways to incorporate Disney’s best practices within their own organizations and businesses to enhance productivity and-or profitability.

As of last Friday, 200 people had registered for the seminar, which starts off Tuesday with a 7 a.m. registration and breakfast at Hilton Garden Inn. The presentation will go from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“We’ve had a lot of positive responses and there’s a lot of intrigue, but a lot of people have no idea what the Disney Institute is,” said Sheena Scales, EMDC project specialist. “The business excellence program is really for any business sector, whether it’s in the entertainment, transportation, or health care fields, from top executives all the way to part-timers.”

Scales already has experienced firsthand one of the ways Disney distinguishes itself.

“I’ve been dealing with them a lot the last few days and they are very supportive,” Scales explained. “When it comes to business practices and customer service, they’re on top of it. I have never called them and not had the phone answered promptly by a person.”

The Disney Institute is the global professional training arm of The Walt Disney Co. and was created in 1986 as a professional development organization. It was merged with the personal enrichment business located on a Disney Institute campus in Saratoga Springs, Fla. In 2002, the organization left its campus to focus on the professional development programs and get closer to meetings and convention partners.

Now it travels the world offering seminars, workshops and presentations, as well as fully customized programming. Learning experiences, which allow participants to go behind the scenes and see firsthand how Disney’s business theory drives its operation, also are offered at Disney destinations in the United States, Europe and Asia. The Disney Institute client roster includes Fortune 500 companies as well as a wide range of small businesses, nonprofits and government agencies.

“This is their first time in Bangor, but we’re hoping it’s something we’ll be able to continue to do on an annual basis,” Scales said.
