PORTLAND, Maine —A 220-pound black bear was shot and killed in Maine’s largest city after being spotted in a tree in a residential neighborhood.
Maine wardens shot the bear about 7 a.m. Friday in the East Deering section of Portland.
Officials say a warden tracked the bear down streets and through backyards before shooting the animal as a last resort because of safety concerns with nearby Route 1 commuter traffic picking up and schools preparing to open for the day.
Wildlife officials are warning residents this is the time of year bears are on the prowl for food as they fatten up in preparation for hibernation in late fall.
Correction: A previous version of this story said the bear weighed 120 pounds. The bear weighed 220 pounds.
