PORTLAND, Maine — A 29-year-old Massachusetts man has pleaded not guilty in Maine to two counts of murder for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend and his longtime friend in July.

Joel Hayden entered his pleas Thursday at his arraignment in Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland.

He is charged with fatally shooting 27-year-old Renee Sandora and 28-year-old Trevor Mills of New Bedford outside the mobile home in New Gloucester where Sandora lived with her and Hayden’s four children.

Sandora’s parents told investigators Sandora had kicked Hayden out of their home, and that she told them that Hayden had accused her of having a relationship with Mills.
