LEWISTON, Maine — An Auburn man surrendered peacefully Wednesday night after holding police at bay for more than an hour on Howe Street.

The 90-minute standoff came to an end at about 8 p.m. when Timothy B. Delisle, 37, walked out of an apartment house at 65 Howe St., police said.

Delisle was arrested on several charges stemming from the standoff and from an earlier domestic incident, police said.

The drama began at about 6:30 p.m. when police were called to a domestic fight at another downtown location. When the first officers arrived, the suspect, said to be armed with a pair of handguns, took off running.

Witnesses told police that Delisle had threatened to shoot someone, according to Lewiston police Sgt. Randy St. Laurent. Several officers chased the suspect, who ran into the building on Howe Street and refused to come outside.

Police spoke with the suspect over a cellphone and a public address system, but as darkness fell, the standoff continued.

Police surrounded the three-story building and closed off a section of Howe Street between Pine and Ash streets. A crowd of more than 100 spectators was kept away from the scene while police negotiated with the suspect.

At 8 p.m., Delisle agreed to come outside where he was arrested and taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. He was charged with terrorizing, refusing to submit to arrest and creating a police standoff.

No guns were found, police said.
