Hazardous waste day coming to South Berwick

By Amanda Beland, Foster's Daily Democrat

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — South Berwick Regional Maintenance Facility will be hosting an annual tri-town household hazardous waste day on Oct. 8.

Residents from Berwick and North and South Berwick are invited to clean out their garages and houses in search of hazardous substances that they no longer need or use.

Some accepted items to bring to the collection include oil-based paints, wood preservatives, lighter fluid, antifreeze, car waxes and polishes, roofing tar, weed killers, moth balls, chemistry sets, furniture polish, oven cleaner, spot remover and photo chemicals, among other substances.

Items that will not be accepted include latex paint, commercial or industrial waste, infectious and biological wastes, fire extinguishers, asbestos and prescription medicines, among others.

It is recommended that when items are brought on collection day, owners leave materials in their original containers with tightened caps and lids and pack their car with to-be-donated materials and drive directly to the donation site.

The collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For information on the event or to figure out exactly what can and cannot be donated, call the Berwick town manager at 698-1101, North Berwick town manager at 676-3201 or South Berwick town manager at 384-3300.
