AUGUSTA, Maine — Some officials in the Maine capital are upset that a developer plans to demolish an abandoned building that once housed a local chapter of the YMCA.

The owner of the 30,000-square-foot Augusta building, Lon Walters, received a permit to demolish the 1914 building in 2008, but he delayed demolition in hopes other arrangements could be made.

He said he tried to find a use for the building, or someone who would buy it, but he has been unable to do so.

The Kennebec Journal said the YMCA sold the building in 2006 after opening a new $10 million facility on Union Street.

Phyllis vonHerrlich, a member of Augusta’s historic commission, calls the pending demolition, “just criminal.”
