EAGLE LAKE, Maine — Two separate motor vehicle crashes involving moose Wednesday left two people in serious condition.

Maine State Police Sgt. Tom Pelletier said that one of the crashes seriously injured Cyr Martin, chief of the Ashland Police Department.

Martin, 46, of Eagle Lake was driving his 2006 Chevy Blazer south on Route 11 between Portage and Eagle Lake about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday when a moose entered the roadway, Pelletier said. Martin’s vehicle struck the moose and swerved into the northbound lane, colliding head-on with a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck.

Martin, the driver of the pickup, 70-year-old Melford Bouchard of Newburgh, and Bouchard’s passenger, Eileen Ross of Newburgh, were taken by Fort Kent and Eagle Lake ambulances to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent.

Ross was treated and then released, according to Pelletier, but Bouchard and Martin were taken by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Martin suffered serious injuries to both legs and Bouchard suffered chest injuries, the sergeant said.

Both vehicles were totaled.

State police Troopers Dan Marquis and Corey Hafford and Pelletier went to the scene of the accident. They were assisted by Eagle Lake Fire and Rescue.

The second moose crash took place on Route 11 about two hours later and three miles south of the first accident. Just before 10 a.m., a 2012 Freightliner delivery truck owned by East Branch Delivery Service of Auburn was southbound on Route 11 in Township 14 Range 6 when driver Ronald Bell of Mars Hill saw a moose step out in front of him. The truck hit and killed the moose but the truck had no damage, according to Pelletier who also investigated that crash.

Wishing the best to Mr. Bouchard and our Chief Cyr Martin … Everyone pay attention as it is that time of year when the moose are present more often than not. Your both in my thoughts and wishing for a speedy and full recovery.

I think Augusta needs to work on increasing the speed limit for moose!

I say since the moose permits are already picked out for this fall, and the fact that these moose normally come out in the same area mostly every day, wouldn’t it be a good idea for the ones with moose permits be given a choice with the support of a warden to drop these road side dangers that kills to many people every year. I get upset every time I hear about accidents like this and some a lot worse.  I’m sure someone will respond saying what happens if they wound the moose and it crosses the highway? Will I say stop the traffic for a few and shot again because as far as I’m concerned, there’s not one moose that is even close to a human life. Our state officials need to pull there pants up and do something about moose killing civilians every year and every year, never fails.

Cyr seems to be doing quite well given his experience.  Visted this morning.  Sounds like he was very lucky.  I’ve seen much worse outcomes w/moose related accidents.   Love the county but never travel there at night, especially this time of year.
