Bowdoin rallies by USM


BRUNSWICK — The nation’s fourth-ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears spotted the University of Southern Maine’s Ariel Kaplan the game-opening goal before rallying for its third win in as many outings, 4-2 in college field hockey action Tuesday.

Cathleen Smith answered by sweeping home a rebound and tipping in an Emily French pass to give Bowdoin the lead later in the first half.

Ella Curren made it 3-1 in the second half before Kaplan cut it to 3-2. But Katie Herter added an insurance goal.

Kayla Lessard didn’t make a save for Bowdoin while Kayla Kennedy made 17 saves on 43 shots for 4-4 USM.

UNE 2, Colby 0

At Waterville, Kaitlyn Warren made 14 saves and Michelle Oswald scored the game-winner and set up Hayley LaPointe’s insurance goal. Both goals came in the first half.

Casey Clark and Emily Koehler assisted on Oswald’s goal.
The University of New England improved to 8-0 while Colby, which outshot UNE 20-10, fell to 0-3.

Women’s soccer

Salem State 2, USM 1

At Salem, Mass., Jackie Gauthier scored a pair of goals and Leah Potchner made two saves on three shots as Salem State improved to 4-3-1.
Casey Connolly and Lauren Kilduff had assists for the winners.

Katie Grenier scored for USM off a Nicole Taylor pass and Kat Rothe made 11 saves on 18 shots for 2-5 USM.
