AUBURN, Maine — A Twin Cities candidate night will bring those seeking City Council or mayors’ seats together for a debate Oct. 12 at the Hilton Garden Inn.

The Candid Candidates forum, sponsored the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce and the Young Professionals of the Lewiston-Auburn Area, aims to bring all 29 candidates for mayor and council seats in both cities together.

“More and more of the key issues we’re facing apply to both cities,” Kelly Jaeger of YPLAA said. “A lot of the issues may come down to the two cities working together. So we wanted to bring all of them together in the same room.”

The forum is scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and is open to all.

It’s the second time YPLAA has sponsored the municipal candidates reception. The group’s first Candid Candidates Night was informal, focusing on letting candidates mingle with constituents and each other.

Jaeger said that will be the plan for the first half-hour. A more formal forum is scheduled at about 5:30 p.m. Each candidate will be allowed to introduce themselves briefly, and then will be asked to answer questions from moderators.

“One of the biggest challenges we face is the number of candidates,” she said. “There are just so many candidates, but we will give all of them a chance. We don’t expect everyone to say a lot, but they will all have the opportunity.”

Voters go to the polls Nov. 8. Lewiston voters will have to select one of five candidates seeking the mayor’s job. Candidates in Wards 1, 4, 5 and 7 are running unopposed, while the candidates in Wards 2, 3 and 6 are competing for seats.

In Auburn, five candidates are seeking two open at-large seats.

Candidates in Wards 1 and 5 have competition, while candidates for seats in Wards 2, 3 and 4 and the mayor’s job are all unopposed.
