AUGUSTA, Maine — Five Maine submarine veterans are the newest members of the Holland Club, an organization that honors the service of submarine veterans.

The five new members all served on U.S. Navy submarines more than 50 years ago.

The Kennebec Journal says the veterans’ service was acknowledged Sunday at an American Legion Post in Augusta.

The Holland Club is named for John Holland the man who designed the Navy’s first viable submarine.

The five inducted into the Holland Club were; John McCutcheon of Fairfield; Lyle Grindle, of Dedham; James King, of Milford; Norman McLeod, of Portland, and William Hale, of Augusta. Hale did not attend the ceremony.
