PORTLAND, Maine — A Windham man has been sentenced to at least 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to fatally shooting another man who allegedly was on his property to steal marijuana.

Joseph Green pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Friday in the Aug. 31, 2010, death of David Harmon. The Portland Press Herald reports that the 45-year-old Green also pleaded guilty to reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and aggravated cultivation of marijuana.

A judge sentenced Green to 17 years, suspending seven years, followed by four years of probation.

Harmon’s relatives say he was planning to steal the marijuana because he was desperate to save his family’s home from foreclosure.
