ELLSWORTH, Maine — The city is offering the public one last chance to tour the Charles C. Knowlton School on Saturday before the school is torn down to make room for a new park.

The school’s doors will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. so that former students and other visitors can take a “farewell tour” of the former elementary school. Demolition crews are expected to begin dismantling the building next week.

The city plans to turn the State Street site into a park featuring a basketball court, a multiuse court that will serve as an ice rink in winter, an amphitheater, a pavilion, a central water feature for children, trails and green space.
