FARMINGTON, Maine — A 24-year-old man who said he accidentally shot and killed his friend while playing with a gun has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Ryan Ouimet of Colts Neck, N.J., was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison with all but 20 months suspended for the May shooting death of 23-year-old Andrew Holland of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The two recently had graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington.

Ouimet had told police he was tossing his handgun back and forth in his hands when he hit the trigger and shot his friend in the chest. Authorities say Ouimet had been smoking marijuana.

The Sun Journal reports that the judge also sentenced Ouimet to four years of probation and 100 hours of community service speaking to students about the dangers of mixing drugs and guns.
