Closing midcoast nursery giving away trees

MORRILL, Maine — Maine will be getting a bit shadier in the future. More than 1,000 trees, representing 75 different species, are being given to Maine municipalities, schools and other nonprofit organizations.

The Maine Forest Service said the community tree program is called Project Canopy. Free distribution begins Thursday from Dutton’s Greenhouse and Nursery in Morrill.

Dutton’s is closing operations this year. Rather than wholesaling the remaining stock, its owners have decided to give back to the communities which over the years have supported their business.

Municipalities and organizations that contacted Project Canopy will begin to pick them up on Thursday.
