Tai chi classes planned


DAMARISCOTTA — Tai chi is an ancient Chinese form of exercise and movement meditation that teaches both relaxation and alertness. Jody Telfair’s Bubbling Spring T’ai Chi classes will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main St. with a new 12-week Elder T’ai Chi-Chi Gong series. Responding to requests from community members, Telfair developed this new course for students with varying capabilities and limitations. Students will be able learn and practice the form either seated or standing. Each student will be encouraged to progress at their own pace.

With practice, patience and perseverance, anyone can learn and benefit from this form of movement which can improve balance and help present falls. To register for this series, call 563-1363. The $120 participant fee for 12 weeks is payable to the instructor. Minimum class size 8 students.

Additionally her 12-week, one-hour Introductory T’ai Chi class, using the movements and principles from the ancient Chinese practices of T’ai Chi and Chi Kung, will begin at 8:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26. Participants in the introductory class will be studying the first level of the Yang Style form developed by renowned T’ai Chi Master, Professor Cheng Man’Ch’ing. To register for Jody’s beginner’s Tai Chi series, call 563-1363 by Sept. 23. Participant fee is $120 per person payable to the instructor. Minimum class size 8 students.

For individuals who have participated in Phase One, Two and Three of Telfair’s course or have completed an introductory T’ai Chi under another instructor, a 12-week intermediate class will be offered at 9 a.m. Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 20, at Jody’s Bubbling Spring Studio on Poor Farm Road in Bristol. A form class takes place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning on Sept. 21. For more information, call Telfair at 563-7484.
