Newport to hold special meeting Tuesday to choose engineer for broken dam

By Alex Barber, BDN Staff

NEWPORT, Maine — Newport will hold a special Board of Selectmen meeting next week to pick an engineer to fix the Sebasticook Lake dam.

The chains on the dam broke two weeks ago while preparations were being made for Tropical Storm Irene. The annual lake drawdown was moved up as a result.

The engineer chosen will try to fix the current dam or replace it.

The board will also award the Transfer Station brush grinding contract.

The meeting is scheduled for noon Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the Newport Town Office.
