Teen swimming with friends drowns in Presumpscot River

FALMOUTH, Maine — Police say a 17-year-old boy drowned while swimming with friends in a river in southern Maine.

Falmouth police Lt. John Kilbridge told the Portland Press Herald that five boys were swimming along the edge of the Presumpscot River early Saturday evening when Mohamed Hassan of Portland began struggling and went under. The other boys tried to find him, but the water was too murky.

Divers from the Maine Marine Patrol and Yarmouth Rescue Dive Team found Hassan’s body nearly two hours later just a few feet from where the group had been swimming.
