TRESCOTT, Maine — When the keynote speaker for Saturday’s Beautiful Day at the Cobscook Community Learning Center called in sick, no one panicked. “We go with the flow,” said one of the event organizers, Penny Guisinger. “We’re women.”
That resilience and capability were exactly what was being celebrated at Beautiful Day, a day set aside to focus on the beauty — inside and out — of women. When asked why the day was established three years ago, Guisinger answered “Why not?”
After a women’s film series in Machias three years ago, organizers looked into expanding the program. “A number of women came together and thought about what would work here,” founder Charley Martin-Berry said. “We decided to have a day that just celebrates our beauty.”
“Not the media perception of beauty,” Guisinger said, “but the real beauty. We wanted to make today an oasis, a time to laugh, share and connect.”
Laughter ended up being the keynote speaker of the day. As women and girls learned to give massages, bake bread, create jewelry, write poetry, backpack and tackle complicated issues such as menopause, bullying, marriage equality and personal relationships, laughter could be heard from one end of CCLC’s campus to the other.
Several women came together to form a writers’ group, while two presenters worked together to form a joint yoga workshop.
This is the third year of the event, which was sponsored for the first two years by Hardy Girls, Healthy Women of Waterville, and Guisinger said it has been successful each year.
