Maine income tax cut target of talks

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Members of a legislative committee say they’ll have to unify behind a single plan to further reduce Maine’s income tax if any proposal is to move forward.

Taxation Committee members took up the issue in the State House on Wednesday. The Kennebec Journal in Augusta said they debated whether to form a new blue ribbon commission to study the issue or adopt an aggressive timeline calling for a vote by the Legislature no later than April.

In the end, the committee decided to ask experts, including economists, accountants and professors, to meet with a legislative subcommittee to give lawmakers ideas for how to move forward.

Earlier this year, the Legislature voted to lower the top income tax rate.
