PORTLAND, Maine — Motorists in Maine’s largest city will need to seek alternate routes over the next few weeks, as the Maine Department of Transportation will be busy with construction work on some major roadways.

Work will start Thursday and run through the remainder of September on Fore Street, starting at the intersection with Atlantic Street and continuing a half-mile to Franklin Street. Work will also be done on Forest Avenue, beginning at the Congress Street intersection and continuing just over a quarter-mile to Park Avenue.

Both projects include milling with a hot mix overlay to improve drainage and other incidental work and may cause traffic delays.

The section of Forest Avenue under construction will be open to inbound traffic but outbound traffic will be detoured to Casco Street.

Commuters should seek alternate routes to avoid traffic and delays.
