PORTLAND, Maine — Officials say a wastewater treatment plant in Portland had to be evacuated when two chemicals accidentally were mixed together and caused a vapor cloud inside the plant.

Fire Chief Fred LaMontagne said nobody was hurt during Tuesday’s scare and no nearby homes had to be evacuated.

The Fire Department was called at about 7:30 a.m. when two chemicals accidentally were pumped together into a large tank at the plant.

LaMontagne said a dangerous situation was mitigated by securing and ventilating the site.
