MERRIMACK, N.H. — Merrimack police say the mother of an 8-month-old infant who drowned in a bathtub has surrendered to authorities to face charges.

Police say 25-year-old Melissa Gutierrez, wanted on charges of negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child, surrendered shortly before 7:45 p.m. Monday. Warrants were issued for her the end of last week but police could not find her.

Police determined that the infant and his 2-year-old brother were left unattended in the bathtub of a house on Wilson Hill Road for an extended period of time on Aug. 25. Gutierrez was attempting to resuscitate the baby when officers arrived. He was pronounced dead at Southern New Hampshire Regional Medical Center.

Gutierrez is to be arraigned Tuesday morning in district court.
