As someone who covers sports on a daily basis, I love the month of September!
The fresh start to a new high school and college season. The Patriots play meaningful games. The Bruins head to camp. But most of all, I love September because of the baseball stretch drive. Scoreboard watching, you bet. I want to know the Yankees are losing 4-2 in the 6th inning. I want to know the latest magic number to clinch!
With that in mind, here are a few Red Sox observations… As painful as it is to write, Curtis Granderson is AL MVP over Ellsbury, Gonzo et al… The Sox should have gone harder at getting Hunter Pence at the trade deadline…When the Sox win or lose a game, I find myself looking at the 7th inning as the key, those 3 outs to get to Bard and Papelbon…Both the Sox and Yanks have had too many chances to put away the other team — this divisional race is headed down to the final week!

—- Perhaps the loss of lights at Cameron Stadium Friday night was something simple like a short in a wingnut, but it highlights a larger issue. Bangor needs to fix up Cameron Stadium! I know a fundraising group is hard at work on this. What a great spot for multi-sport championship games — with new lights, field turf and some fan creature comforts!
—- Did you see the parade in downtown Burlington,Vermont when B’s goalie Tim Thomas brought the Stanley Cup back to UVM! Thousands lined the streets!
I can’t get enough of Tim Thomas! He had the best quote of the sports year during the Cup finals, remember when Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo complained that Thomas didn’t say anything nice about him, after Luongo had said nice things are Thomas? The Thomas quote, “I didn’t realize it was my job to pump his tires.”
—- Anyone notice the name Xander Bogaerts moving up to No. 6 prospect in the Red Sox farm system? Two years ago he was playing at Mansfield Stadium for Aruba in the Senior League World Series. Now the 18-year-old shortstop has 16 home runs and 44 RBI for in the Greenville Class A league! According to soxprospects.com here are the top 6 Sox farmhands: No. 1 Will Middlebrooks, No.2 Ryan Kalish, No. 3 Anthony Ranaudo, No. 4 Jose Iglesias, No. 5 Ryan Lavarnway, No. 6 Bogaerts.
—- Mark this date on your sports calendar: Thursday October 6th! The Bruins vs. Flyers at Boston Garden opening night, raising the championship banner. And, Game 5 of the ALDS! What if it’s needed and at Fenway?
Can’t wait for Bangor vs. Lawrence football Saturday night! If you can’t be there we’ve got it on AM620 WZON!
