CAMDEN — Millie Benner, a certified nursing assistant at Quarry Hill in Camden for nearly four years, received the Excellence in Long-Term Care award from the Maine Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program.

At a gathering held in Benner’s honor on Aug. 25 at Quarry Hill, Director of Nursing Nancy Marcille said the Waldoboro resident exemplifies the professionalism and dedication to quality care that the award seeks to honor.

“Millie always has a smile, a word of encouragement, and a funny story to tell that brings a twinkle to her eyes and a glow to the hearts of everyone she’s with,” said Marcille. “For years, the highlight of one resident’s evening was when Millie would use her break time to watch a special TV show with her. The daughter of another resident commented on an afghan that was on her mom’s bed, only to discover later that Millie had hand-made it for her mother.”

Marcille said that Benner serves as a role model for other CNAs, generously sharing what she has learned from her 30-plus years in long-term care.

Benner said she felt privileged to receive the award, and that she has gained at least as much from those she serves as she has given to them. “I’ve learned that there’s a lot of goodness in people,” she said.

Benner, along with other recipients of the 2011 award, will be recognized at a tea on Sept. 21, at the Blaine House in Augusta.
