Orono, Bucksport roll to victories

PITTSFIELD — The Mowrer brothers — Dominic, Cameron and Christian — combined to score five touchdowns as the Orono Red Riots opened the high school football season with a resounding 57-32 victory over Maine Central Institute.

Dominic Mowrer got things started with a 55-yard scoring jaunt and a 23-yard run, before Bryce Mehnert completed scoring passes of 20 and 21 yards to Tyler Eddy and Sam Chase, respectively. Cameron Mowrer’s 2-yard TD run made it 37-0 at halftime.

Christian Mowrer and Cameron Mowrer each logged a 2-yard TD run in the third quarter, while Chad Orne added 3-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Cameron Mowrer had two conversion rushes, while Dominic kicked three PATs and rushed for another.

Ethan Rumery put Maine Central Institute on the board with a 10-yard TD pass to Zack Valente. Eric Hathaway scored from 2 yards out, then Jonathan Santiago peeled off a 30-yard scoring scamper and an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Bucksport 57, WA Raiders 12

At East Machias, Shawn Smith turned in touchdown runs of 18, 2 and 5 yards as the Bucksport Golden Bucks beat Washington Academy in the Raiders’first varsity football game.

Josh Gray scored on a 30-yard punt return and also kicked a 24-yard field goal and converted six of seven PAT kicks for the 1-0 Golden Bucks. Chris Powell scored on runs of 17 and 3 yards, while Mike Cummings had a 12-yard TD run and Mike York ran 20 yards for a score.

Junior halfback Andrew Henderson scored the first touchdown in Raiders history when he raced 74 yards in the second quarter. Zac Ragot turned in a 24-yard touchdown run on the last play of the game for 0-1 Washington Academy.

Leavitt 27, Hampden 6

At Turner Center, Jake Ouellette ran for touchdowns of 13, 9 and 1 yards to carry the Hornets past the Broncos.

Leavitt got on the board first when Jordan Hersom scored on a 16-yard run.

Hampden answered in the second quarter when Nick Stevens hauled in a 22-yard touchdown pass form Brian Fickett.

However, Ouellette then responded with three unanswered touchdown runs, one in the second quarter and two in the third, to carry the Hornets to victory.

Leavitt outgained Hampden on the ground 293-175 and also recorded 115 passing yards while Hampden totaled 20.

Jordan Hersom completed 5 of 8 passes for Leavitt and Fickett completed 3 of 9 for Hampden.
