PORTLAND, Maine — A delegation from Japan will visit Portland, Augusta and other Maine communities this week to discuss alternative energy, business and aquaculture.

The five-day visit scheduled to start Tuesday includes stops at the Gulf of Maine Research Center in Portland; the Maine International Trade Center; the University of Maine’s Offshore Wind Laboratory; the Maine Aquaculture Association; and the Maine Shellfish Growers.

The delegation of government officials, business leaders and university faculty members is from the Aomori Prefecture. The Kennebec Journal reports Maine’s relationship with the prefecture dates to 1889, when a 1,500-ton ship sailing from Bath wrecked off the coast of Aomori and a village rescued the sailors.
