MONSON, Maine — About 40 Willimantic residents elected one selectman during a special town meeting Friday to fill one of two vacant positions.
Susan Bennett was elected to fill a position that was set to expire at the annual 2011 town meeting. Bennett said she would serve in the position only until that time.
Residents voted to take no action on the second vacant seat, rather, they want to fill the position at the annual town meeting. No date has been set for the town meeting which has usually been held in August.
The two vacancies occurred when John Tatko and Tom Capraro both resigned as selectmen in late August after months of turmoil over renovations they authorized at the historic town hall. Structural problems with the renovations have limited the use of the town hall to no more than 30 people on the first floor and has eliminated the use of the basement by the public per the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Larger meetings, like Friday’s special town meeting, must now be held at the Monson Community Center.
Selectmen plan to meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, to discuss the town budget and other matters.
