DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — An organizational meeting to discuss a proposal to establish an adult day service center for the physically or cognitively impaired will be held at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the town office.

“We’re going to share our thoughts on what an adult day service center is and our thoughts to have one in Dover-Foxcroft in Central Hall,” Chris Maas of the Friends of Central Hall said Thursday.

Maas said the group has been working on the proposal with Dr. Lesley Fernow, the Eastern Area Agency on Aging and the Charlotte White Center, which would operate the center.

Participants at next week’s meeting will learn about the proposal and the benefits of such a center, will hear an overview of other plans for Central Hall and will have an opportunity to share thoughts about how best to provide such a service for senior citizens and handicapped adults.

“There’s a lot of work to be done on the project,” Maas said. Organizers have very preliminary figures of the cost to set up and operate such a facility, which will be shared next week, he said. The group plans to seek state and federal funds to help establish the center.

“In Dover-Foxcroft, we have almost the entire gamut of services and facilities for older folks,” Maas said. He said the town has senior housing, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, Mayo Regional Hospital, hospice and about a dozen agencies that provide services to the elderly population. “The one piece that’s missing is an adult day service center.”

Maas said the center will help those caregivers who have work to do or who need respite care and who want a safe place for their loved one.

Maas said supporters need to dig in and make it happen.

The proposed center in Dover-Foxcroft would operate similarly to the Friendship Cottage Adult Day Service Center in Blue Hill, according to Maas. He said the operators of that facility have been very helpful.
