MOUNT DESERT, Maine — A man who died Thursday at a construction site off Ripples Road died of natural causes, according to local police.

Troy R. Sargent, 38, of Sullivan was found unconscious at a private property on Fern Way around 4 p.m. Thursday, Sgt. Kevin Edgecomb of the Mount Desert Police Department said Friday. Sargent had been working by himself when a co-worker found him and called for help.

Emergency response personnel were not sure at first whether Sargent might have been stricken as a result of a workplace safety issue, according to Edgecomb. He was found in an excavated area, but apparently had been standing there when he experienced a medical problem, Edgecomb said.

Dispatchers initially called for a LifeFlight helicopter, he said, but Sargent was declared dead soon after police and ambulance personnel arrived at the scene.

An autopsy performed Friday by the state medical examiner’s office determined Sargent died of natural causes, Edgecomb said.

Maine State Police and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration were contacted, which is standard procedure for any possible workplace fatality, according to police.
